Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu has praised India's low-cost mobile data, medicines and digital payment systems, crediting Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani's launch of Jio and the Narendra Modi-led government's policies for making services more affordable and encouraging competition.
In a post on X on October 10, Vembu said India has among the world's lowest data prices, adding that he often uses his mobile phone's internet connection to work on his computer while travelling in the country instead of connecting to local Wi-Fi. He pointed to the widespread use of dual-SIM phones and large data plans among Indians as evidence of their affordability.
Medicines and payments
Vembu said India also has among the lowest medicine prices globally, with visitors increasingly buying medicines in the country to take home. He highlighted the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as one of the world's lowest-cost payment systems.
Drawing a comparison with the United States, Vembu said Tesla faces protection from Chinese competition in the American market, which keeps electric vehicle prices higher than in other markets.
A competitive economy
The Zoho co-founder credited the Modi government with promoting a competitive economy, encouraging startups and ensuring that the benefits reach ordinary Indians. He said government policies had helped Indian startups make significant advances in low-cost rockets, potentially creating competition for SpaceX — similar to the challenge Chinese electric vehicle makers pose to Tesla.
Concluding his post, Vembu described these developments as evidence of India's competitive economy and said they were facts that Elon Musk should consider.
