Ukraine and the United States on Tuesday hailed "very productive" talks in Oslo as the two sides moved to draw a line under a bitter feud between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump over the war with Russia.
After the talks in the Norwegian capital, Zelenskyy thanked Washington for resuming US intelligence sharing on looming Russian strikes against civilian targets and energy plants. "We are thankful that intelligence works," he told reporters, standing alongside Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. "I'm speaking about early warning, what is very important for our people, for children, adults, civilians, because we can hear when ballistic is coming."
What the US side said
A US official told AFP that Zelenskyy held "very productive and constructive discussions" with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who joined remotely because of the flu. "Ukraine brought forward new ideas and proposals," the official said, adding that the parties made "meaningful progress in aligning on a coordinated approach to engaging Russia and advancing the diplomatic process."
The official described "a very positive and constructive spirit, strong cooperation among the parties, and a shared determination to achieve a comprehensive and durable peace."
Next: Moscow
Witkoff is now due to travel from Oslo to Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, aiming to build on the Oslo progress and create a pathway to direct three-way talks involving Kyiv, Moscow and Washington.
The positive tone follows days of open tension: Trump struck a diesel-supply deal with Putin and furiously called for Zelenskyy to be replaced after Ukraine refused to stop striking Russian oil refineries. Even as the Oslo talks were praised, Trump kept up the pressure at the White House, saying he wanted Zelenskyy to "make a deal" with Russia, which is escalating strikes on Ukraine as winter approaches.
