Bengaluru-based deep-technology startup Vimag Labs has begun manufacturing operations at its first production facility in Jhajjar, Haryana, taking its rare-earth-free electric motor technology from the laboratory into serial commercial production.
The 10,000-square-foot plant at Met City is built to produce and assemble electric motor and control systems around the company's proprietary magnet-free technology, which replaces conventional permanent magnets with software-defined magnetic fields. The facility includes clean-room assembly areas, Industry 4.0 digitally connected production lines and IoT-enabled monitoring and traceability systems, and its first production batch has already been manufactured and exported to international customers.
A phased Rs 50 crore expansion
Vimag has outlined a phased investment plan of about Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) to expand its manufacturing footprint across India, with spending tied to customer demand, programme ramp-ups and product requirements. The Jhajjar site can be expanded to roughly 20,000 square feet, and the company's manufacturing network is designed to scale up to 10,000 motor and control systems per month as volumes grow.
The initial production focus is on mid-power motor and control systems for electric mobility and other electrified applications. As customer programmes mature, Vimag plans to move into high-power systems rated at 570 kW (764 bhp) and above, which will need additional manufacturing, testing and industrialisation infrastructure.
Co-founder and chief executive Manish Seth described the start of manufacturing as an important milestone in the company's journey from technology development and validation to industrialisation and commercial production, adding that the scale and timing of the investment would be adjusted in line with demand.
Why it matters for India
India's electric-vehicle industry remains heavily dependent on imported rare-earth magnets, a supply chain dominated by China. A commercially viable magnet-free motor — Vimag says its patented VMSM platform matches conventional motors on performance without permanent magnets — could give Indian EV makers a path to greater self-reliance. The company recently raised $5 million in a Series A round led by Accel and has signed a manufacturing memorandum of understanding with Jendamark Pvt Ltd.
