Uttarakhand Holds Cabinet Meeting in Banbasa Near Nepal Border for the First Time; Dhami Raises Resident Doctors' Stipend to Over Rs 1 Lakh

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday chaired a Cabinet meeting in Banbasa in Champawat district, marking the first time the state government has held such a meeting in an area close to the India-Nepal international border. Around 25-26 decisions were taken at the meeting, including raising the monthly stipend of senior and junior resident doctors from about Rs 75,000 to over Rs 1 lakh and extending by one year the deadline for regularising Class-B lands in Dehradun, Lalkuan and Bindukhatta.

Speaking about the choice of Banbasa, Dhami said the government's objective is to take governance closer to the people and ensure that policy decisions are informed by the issues and development needs of different regions. In a post on X after the meeting, he wrote that the Banbasa session marked "the beginning of a new initiative" under which cabinet meetings would not be confined to Dehradun but would be held across districts, so local problems, possibilities and development priorities can be understood more closely and effective decisions taken.

Focus on border regions

The Chief Minister underlined the strategic and developmental importance of Uttarakhand's border regions, describing them as "vital links in our security, culture, and development" and saying areas along the international border should not be viewed as mere geographical boundaries. He said the government's priority is to integrate people living in border areas into the mainstream of development while strengthening basic facilities, employment, tourism and connectivity there, and ensuring balanced development across every region of the state.

Key decisions taken

Among the key decisions, the monthly stipend for senior and junior resident doctors in the state will rise from around Rs 75,000 to more than Rs 1 lakh. The cabinet also extended by one year the deadline under the state scheme for regularising Class-B lands in Dehradun, Lalkuan and Bindukhatta, a scheme in place since 2019. The meeting also discussed management of the Char Dham Yatra, the traffic surge around Kainchi Dham and the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan outreach campaign, with programmes planned across districts marking 25 years of governance on October 7.
