US and China Set Up Communication Channel for AI Incidents After Trump–Xi Summit

The United States and China will establish a dedicated channel for communicating about artificial intelligence incidents, the White House announced on Friday, one of the few concrete results to emerge from this week's three-day summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.

The agreement creates a "bilateral communication channel" for AI incidents — effectively an early-warning line between the world's two leading AI powers — alongside a formal "US–China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue" to exchange views on the risks and benefits of advanced systems. The White House said the next SI exchange is expected to take place by November.

The summit itself was high on ceremony and short on breakthroughs. The two leaders discussed AI, trade, the war in Iran, North Korea, Russia and Ukraine, and officials described the AI channel as among the most tangible outcomes of the visit.

The terminology became part of the story. Trump has been pushing to replace "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence," arguing that "artificial" makes the technology sound fake and that the new term is much more accurate. The White House said the two leaders agreed to adopt the new label in official use.

The two sides struck markedly different tones on the technology. Trump has repeatedly dismissed fears that AI could endanger humanity, while Xi urged that development stay firmly under human control. "We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control," Xi said at the White House on Thursday.

Trump called the visit "one of Friendship, Strength, and Success, for both China and the USA," telling reporters the two sides had made "great strides." Beijing did not immediately respond to the White House announcement on the AI channel.

The visit also yielded tariff relief for $30 billion of goods in each direction and a Chinese pledge to import at least 10 million metric tons of American coal across 2027 and 2028, alongside the symbolic gift of a pair of pandas destined for Zoo Atlanta.
