Eight years after Tumbbad first reached theatres, actor Sohum Shah has looked back on the film's journey from a distinctive theatrical release to a cult favourite — and on the demanding role of Vinayak Rao that continues to define his career.

In an interview published to mark the film's anniversary, Shah described Vinayak as a deeply flawed, ambitious man whose insatiable desire for wealth drives much of the narrative. "It is a dream role for me, and I will always be as greedy as Hastar for more roles like this," he said, referring to the film's mythic demon figure.

The work behind the role

Shah also spoke about the physical and vocal preparation the role demanded. Raised in a small town in Rajasthan close to the Haryana border, the actor carries a strong Haryanvi influence in his natural speech. Adapting to the Marathi-influenced tone required for the film meant working extensively on his diction, he said, adding that he poured his heart and soul into making the performance authentic.

Legacy and sequel

The film's enduring appeal, Shah suggested, lies in how its central character continues to resonate with audiences long after release. Its journey into cult status, he noted, is a testament to the lasting impact of its storytelling.

Shah is currently filming Tumbbad 2, the next chapter of the saga, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Alia Bhatt in important roles. He has also launched official merchandise for the film ahead of Halloween 2026 and the sequel's planned 2027 release.
