Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported record third-quarter revenue of T$1.49 trillion ($46.71 billion) on Thursday, beating market forecasts as surging demand for AI applications powered a 50% jump from the year-earlier period.

Beating every estimate

Revenue for the July-September quarter came in at T$1.49 trillion, according to Reuters calculations, compared with T$989.92 billion in the same quarter last year. The figure topped an LSEG SmartEstimate of T$1.46 trillion drawn from 19 analysts — and also beat TSMC's own July guidance, when the company had told investors to expect between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.

For September alone, TSMC reported revenue of T$511.86 billion, up 54.6% year on year. The company, a major supplier to Nvidia and Apple and Asia's most valuable publicly listed company with a market capitalisation of $2.1 trillion, gave no details or forward guidance in its brief revenue statement.

AI boom lifts the whole sector

The record quarter underscores how the artificial-intelligence buildout continues to convert into orders at the foundry that makes nearly all of the world's most advanced logic chips. On the same day, Samsung Electronics projected its quarterly operating profit would top 100 trillion won — a world first for a technology company — estimating a nearly nine-fold jump in third-quarter earnings as booming demand for AI chips drove strong memory sales.

TSMC is scheduled to report full third-quarter earnings next Thursday, when it will also update its outlook for the current quarter and the rest of the year. Analysts expect a 64% on-year rise in third-quarter net profit to T$740.8 billion, according to an LSEG SmartEstimate.

Investors, however, were measured in their response: TSMC's Taipei-listed shares closed down 1.35% on Thursday ahead of the revenue release, though they remain up 64.52% so far this year, in line with the broader market.
