Chinese technology giant Tencent has signed its largest overseas computing lease to date, securing access to roughly 100,000 advanced AI chips through Oracle data centres in Southeast Asia, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The five-year lease is estimated to be worth about $7 billion, with an upfront payment of roughly 30 per cent, according to the report. The chips are of a kind not available inside China, giving Tencent a route to expand training capacity outside the mainland.

What it means

The deal underlines the scale of Tencent's artificial intelligence ambitions. The company has been ramping up investment in developing and deploying large language models and agentic AI products, and recently released a preview of a new AI image-generation model for professional creators with text-to-image and image-to-image capabilities.

Rather than waiting for every accelerator to be installed in a domestic facility, Tencent would be leasing large blocks of already-deployed capacity abroad and consuming the hardware as infrastructure — a shift in how constrained AI compute is being acquired.

A wider scramble

Chinese technology firms have been racing to secure AI chips as US export curbs tighten and Beijing promotes home-grown alternatives to American technology. The report casts Oracle as a key intermediary between chip suppliers, data-centre developers and frontier-model companies.

A note of caution: Reuters reported that it could not independently verify the Financial Times account, and neither Oracle nor Tencent had responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
