A new personal AI assistant called Tab has emerged from stealth with a $300 million valuation, joining an increasingly crowded race to put agentic artificial intelligence inside everyday messaging apps. The startup says its assistant lives inside iMessage and WhatsApp, completing real tasks on a user's behalf rather than simply offering instructions.
Tab announced earlier this week that it had officially come out of stealth at the $300 million valuation, though the company declined to share exactly how much it has raised. The company was started earlier this year by Brennan Erbz, Stafford Schlitt and Ammar Amdani, and its backers include SV Angel, Valar Ventures and American Spirit.
An assistant that does, not just advises
The product works entirely through text. Users message the Tab assistant on iMessage or WhatsApp with whatever they need, from ordering groceries to finding presents for a birthday party, and Tab carries it out. Amdani told TechCrunch the assistant has its own phone number, computer and wallet, which lets it take action on tasks instead of telling users how to do them.
"You text it like you'd text someone you trust and it takes the weight off," Amdani said. "The bills, the bookings, the calls you keep putting off, remembering the people you love."
Tab enters a field that includes the breakout hit Instinct and Meta's Muse, both of which aim to help users with everyday chores. Amdani acknowledged the competition but argued the winners of this consumer AI race will not necessarily be the ones with the best technical demonstrations.
Trust as the product
Instead, Tab is pitching trust as its differentiator. "Capability is table stakes. Trust is the product," Amdani said, adding that user data is never used to train AI, payment cards sit in a vault the company itself cannot access, and nothing that cannot be undone happens without the user's approval.
The company says it is growing mostly by word of mouth for now and plans to launch a new product soon, though it has not said what that will be.
