New Delhi: The Sports Ministry has announced a massive increase in financial assistance for National Sports Federations hosting international events, allowing federations to receive up to Rs 50 crore — a twenty-five-fold jump from the earlier ceiling of Rs 2 crore.

Revised guidelines under the ANSF scheme

The increase comes through the operational guidelines for the revised Scheme of Assistance to NSFs, announced on Friday. The ministry said the revamp aligns with India's long-term sporting vision, including the country's bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

The top slab of Rs 50 crore is available in disciplines where India has won medals or finished in the top 10 at the Olympics or World Championships, for events featuring at least 50 countries and 500 athletes in individual sports, or 12 countries and 200 participants in team sports.

The rest of the funding ladder

A second slab of Rs 20 crore covers disciplines with top-16 finishes at the Olympics or World Championships, as well as world championships of indigenous sports with more than 50 participating countries. Asian championships hosted in India can receive up to Rs 3 crore, depending on participation levels and India's standing at the Asian Games in that discipline.

Up to Rs 50 crore has also been earmarked for conducting the National Games, covering equipment, timing, scoring and result services, and technical officials.

How proposals will be judged

Federation proposals will be assessed by a designated committee headed by the Secretary (Sports), which will decide its own evaluation methods. Funding for national championships remains unchanged: Rs 90 lakh for high-priority disciplines — Rs 30 lakh each for senior, junior and sub-junior categories — and Rs 75 lakh for priority and general disciplines.

The ministry also plans dedicated Olympic Training Centres, one for each sport, with modern sports-science facilities aimed at reducing reliance on overseas training — a commitment Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had made earlier.
