SpaceX has agreed to acquire private-equity firm Grain Management's nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum, a move aimed at accelerating its Starlink Mobile wireless ambitions that sent telecom shares tumbling on both sides of the Atlantic on Friday.

The deal, announced on Thursday, would give SpaceX up to 14 MHz of paired low-band airwaves and is subject to approval by regulators including the Federal Communications Commission. The companies did not disclose financial terms; the Wall Street Journal, cited by Reuters, reported the value at around $8 billion. SpaceX chief Elon Musk described the airwaves on X as "the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle" for the company's mobile plans.

Market reaction
Shares of T-Mobile US, Verizon and AT&T fell between 5 and 6 percent in premarket trading on Friday. In Europe, the STOXX Europe 600 Telecommunications index dropped 3.3 percent to its lowest level since February, with Deutsche Telekom falling 8 percent, Vodafone 4.5 percent, Orange 3.4 percent and Telefonica 3.3 percent. SpaceX shares rose 3.6 percent. Tower operators bucked the selloff — American Tower, Crown Castle and SBA Communications gained 5 to 6 percent — on bets that a SpaceX wireless buildout would drive tower demand.

Analysts urged calm. Morgan Stanley said the competitive threat to established carriers would materialize gradually, starting in rural markets. Citi told clients the selloff was a buying opportunity for the incumbent carriers.

Why low-band matters
Low-band spectrum travels farther and penetrates buildings better than higher frequencies, making it valuable for broad wireless coverage. The acquisition follows SpaceX's separate roughly $19.6 billion purchase of EchoStar spectrum, underlining the company's push from satellite broadband into mainstream mobile service.
