Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, the franchise announced on Tuesday.

Taking over from Badani

Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, under whom Delhi finished sixth in IPL 2026. The 54-year-old made his coaching debut only last year, guiding Delhi's sister franchise Pretoria Capitals in South Africa's SA20 league, and now steps into the top job at the IPL side.

The appointment marks a homecoming of sorts. Ganguly joined Delhi as an advisor in 2019 and later served as the team's director of cricket across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, giving him a close-up view of the squad he will now lead from the dugout.

A storied career

One of Indian cricket's most influential captains, Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals for the country. He is widely credited with building the aggressive, self-believing Indian side of the early 2000s, a leadership stint that reshaped the team's identity.

Delhi Capitals will hope that his experience of building winning dressing rooms translates to the franchise. The announcement comes well ahead of the 2027 season, giving Ganguly time to shape the squad and the support staff before the campaign begins.
