Six Killed as Under-Construction Building Collapses in Ambala's Dhulkot Village

The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Ambala's Dhulkot village climbed to six on Monday, after two more workers pulled from the debris were declared dead late on Sunday night, officials said.

The structure came down on Sunday evening while workers were casting the concrete slab — the lintel — for the roof on the first floor. The sudden collapse left more than ten people injured.

What happened at the site

One of the injured workers said on Sunday that some labourers were on the ground floor while others were engaged in the casting work above when the building gave way.

Rescue teams reached the spot soon after the incident. Excavators and JCB machines were pressed into service to clear the rubble and search for people feared trapped beneath it, according to local reports. Injured workers were taken to Civil Hospital in Ambala City, and reports from the site put the number of workers present at the time of the collapse at between 40 and 50.

Questions over the structure

Local reports said the three-storey structure was being built as a warehouse by a city-based property dealer. It has not yet been established whether the construction had all the required official approvals, and authorities are expected to examine the matter as part of their investigation.

Officials said rescue work was continuing and that a probe into the cause of the collapse would follow once relief operations are complete.
