Filmmaker and producer Siddharth P Malhotra has confirmed that sequels to both of his big 2026 hits are underway. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama published on October 3, Malhotra said work has begun on Ikka 2, a follow-up to his Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna-starrer Netflix film, and on a second season of the Parineeti Chopra-led whodunit Shaque: Trust No One.
A banner year for the director
Malhotra described 2026 as a breakthrough year. Ikka, which released on Netflix earlier this year with Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles, drew strong viewership, and his web series Shaque: Trust No One, starring Parineeti Chopra, has also performed well on the same platform. He told the portal that both Ikka and Shaque had broken records, which is why the follow-ups were greenlit. The writing for both projects is currently in progress.
Shaque Season 2 will tell a new story
The director clarified that Shaque Season 2 will not continue the story of the first season. Instead, it will feature an entirely new story — a fresh case built around the whodunit format, with the writing team already working on it. He also shared the backstory of the show's origins. The concept was first developed about eight to nine years ago by director Rensil D'Silva, who had originally conceived it as a feature film. Malhotra said the team later reworked it as a series, realised it had the legs to sustain multiple episodes, and sold the idea to Netflix.
Record-breaking response for Shaque
Malhotra said the first season's reception exceeded his expectations. According to him, the show held the number one spot even after more than a week of release and figured in the top 10 lists in 20 to 30 countries. He noted that in his long career he had never received so many congratulatory calls for a series, adding that Netflix was pleased with the show's performance. He also weighed in on the spoiler problem that whodunits face in the social media age. Since the culprit is revealed at the end, he said no one can fully stop viewers from giving away the climax online — but the fact that people keep watching even after knowing the ending is a credit to the writing team. The interview also touched on Parineeti Chopra, who learned she was pregnant after the shoot began. Malhotra said the makers arranged for her to stay close to the shooting location so she would not have to travel, describing it as the production's responsibility to take care of her.
