Indian equities closed September with their worst monthly performance since 2018, as persistent foreign selling, elevated crude prices and weak sentiment dragged the benchmarks to a second consecutive monthly decline.
Month-end snapshot
On the final trading day, September 30, the BSE Sensex slipped 48.78 points (0.07%) to close at 72,480.29, swinging intraday between gains of over 530 points and fag-end selling. The NSE Nifty fell 95.75 points (0.42%) to end at 22,620.45, its third straight day in the red. Pharma, healthcare and metal stocks led the weakness, with BSE Hospitals sliding 4.97% and Healthcare down 2.35%, even as realty and private banks found some support.
The September tally
For the full month, the Sensex declined 5.7% and the Nifty 5.9%, according to G. Chokkalingam, head of research at Equinomics Research, speaking to Times Now. He attributed the slide to monsoon failure, a weakening rupee, a rise of more than 7% in crude oil prices, continued selling by foreign institutional investors and IPO-led liquidity concerns. ET Now reported the Nifty's roughly 6% September fall as the worst September performance since 2018, and the biggest monthly decline since March 2026.
Sectoral damage
Information technology bore the brunt: the Nifty IT index tumbled 11% in September — its worst monthly fall since the 2008 global financial crisis. Auto and consumption were the other major sectoral losers for the month. Market value of BSE-listed companies eroded by Rs 18 lakh crore over September, per ET Now.
Other market signals
The rupee strengthened 13–16 paise to close at 95.81–95.82 per US dollar on Wednesday, while foreign investors offloaded equities worth Rs 9,980.22 crore on Tuesday, September 29, per exchange data cited by ET Now. Brent crude hovered near $97.35 a barrel and gold traded around $4,187.63 at the time of reporting.
