Karthi's Tamil spy thriller Sardar 2 is getting a quick second life on streaming. The film, which released in theatres on September 10, begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video on October 1 — just 21 days after its theatrical debut.
Directed by P S Mithran, the sequel to the 2022 hit Sardar brings back Karthi in dual roles: the veteran RAW operative Chandra Bose, better known as Sardar, and his son, intelligence officer Vijay Prakash. The story pits the father-son pair against an international underworld figure known as Black Dagger, played by S J Suryah, who is hunting three access keys tied to a past mission and a biochemical weapon called Doku.
The cast also includes Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath, Rajisha Vijayan, Yogi Babu and Balaji Sakthivel. The film will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
A shrinking window
The three-week gap between the big screen and the living room continues a trend that trade watchers have been flagging all year. According to the coverage, Sardar 2 received a mixed theatrical response and collected a reported Rs 23.85 crore worldwide, with roughly Rs 19 crore coming from India — below what was expected of a Karthi-led sequel.
It is the second time this year that a Karthi film has moved to streaming in under a month. His festive comedy-action release Vaa Vaathiyar arrived on the same platform just 14 days after hitting theatres, prompting analysts to ask whether such short windows are hurting cinema owners, who typically rely on a four-to-eight-week exclusive run to recover their investments.
The film functions as both a prequel and a sequel, expanding the world of the original Sardar with a new international threat and a backstory that, among other threads, touches on the dangers of antibiotic overuse.
