The loss
Rupi Soren, the mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and wife of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren, died at a private hospital in Ranchi on Wednesday evening. She was 80. Dr Nitesh Priya, director of the Hill View Hospital and Research Centre, told news agency PTI that she died around 8.30 pm after being put on ventilator support earlier in the day. She had been admitted to the hospital on September 18 with breathing difficulty and was battling multiple complications under constant monitoring by a team of doctors.
A pillar of the Soren family
Rupi Soren stood beside Shibu Soren through decades of his political and social struggle during the Jharkhand movement, marrying him on January 1, 1962 and shouldering the family's responsibilities while he devoted himself to the cause. Her death comes a little more than a year after Shibu Soren, the late JMM leader and former chief minister, died in Delhi on August 4, 2025. The JMM described her as a symbol of "struggle, sacrifice, and patience", and called her passing an "irreparable loss" for Jharkhand and the country. She had also contested the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 1999, when the constituency was part of undivided Bihar, losing narrowly to BJP leader Babulal Marandi by fewer than 5,000 votes.
Hemant Soren, who had visited his mother at the hospital earlier on Wednesday, wrote an emotional post on X: after his father left, his mother had been his greatest shelter, and now that shelter too had merged into the lap of nature. Her last rites were to be conducted at Nemra in Ramgarh district on Thursday.
Condolences pour in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on Thursday, saying on X that he was pained by the passing of Rupi Soren, recalling her work towards empowering tribal communities and extending his thoughts to Hemant Soren, Kalpana Soren and the family. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, former chief minister Champai Soren, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, BRS working president K T Rama Rao, former CM Raghubar Das and Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato also conveyed condolences to the family.
