Rahul Gandhi Hosts INDIA Bloc MPs at High Tea Today, Joint Press Conference on Voter-Roll Row Planned

New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has invited INDIA bloc MPs, civil society members and student organisations for a high tea at his residence on Tuesday, as the opposition keeps up pressure over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

A joint press conference of INDIA bloc leaders is scheduled for the afternoon, followed by tea at 4:00 p.m. at 5, Sunehri Bagh Road, New Delhi, according to PTI sources.

Follows Monday's "March for Democracy"

The invitation referred to the previous day's "March for Democracy," in which leaders of the INDIA bloc marched through central Delhi toward the Supreme Court to protest alleged irregularities in the voter-roll revision. Monday's march, which began near Connaught Place, was led by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, D. Raja, M.A. Baby, Tejashwi Yadav and Supriya Sule, and was stopped by Delhi Police at barricades on Bhagwan Dass Road.

Petition names EC, CEC as parties

The joint petition submitted to the Supreme Court names the Election Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as parties, and seeks a stay on the SIR exercise. The invitation comes a day after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a meeting with opposition leaders, saying the matter is sub judice.
