Director Priyadarshan has cast fresh doubt over the future of Hera Pheri 3, saying he does not believe the long-delayed comedy sequel will ever reach theatres. The filmmaker, who directed the original 2000 hit, made the remarks in an interview with Hindustan Times published on Wednesday.
Too many complications
Asked whether he thought the third instalment would eventually materialise, Priyadarshan was blunt: "I don't think it will ever get made." On his own decision to step away from the project, he said, "That has a lot of other complications, too many complications. I'd need chapters and chapters to talk about it."
The film has faced a troubled road to production, including lead actor Paresh Rawal's exit and subsequent return and a legal dispute over the franchise's rights. Producer Feroze Nadiadwala has maintained that the project remains on track even without Priyadarshan, but no production timeline has been announced.
No to Bhagam Bhag 2 as well
Priyadarshan also revealed he turned down Akshay Kumar's offer to direct Bhagam Bhag 2, the sequel to his 2006 comedy starring Kumar, Rawal and Govinda. He said he avoids sequels as a rule, arguing a follow-up must surpass the original to be worth making. "That is why I never do sequels... unless you have a much better story, you shouldn't do it," he said, citing Terminator 2 as the rare sequel that bettered its predecessor.
The director has had a mixed year, with Bhooth Bangla emerging as a success while Haiwaan underperformed. But his position on Hera Pheri 3 is now clear: the complications, he suggests, run deeper than any single disagreement, and fans of the beloved comedy franchise may have to make their peace with it ending at two films.
