Prime Video has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Bloodaxe, the upcoming historical drama from Michael Hirst, the creator behind Vikings. Alongside the footage, the platform confirmed that the series will premiere on January 20, 2027, with all eight episodes of its first season released together.
The announcement was made on October 10 during a panel at New York Comic Con, where Hirst was joined by co-showrunner Horatio Hirst and cast members Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen and Levi Miller. The discussion, moderated by Nerdist editor-in-chief Rotem Rusak, gave audiences their first look at the show through both the teaser and its key art.
A Viking struggle for the Norwegian throne
Set in 10th-century Norway, Bloodaxe follows Erik Bloodaxe, played by Molyneux, as he battles to claim and hold the Norwegian crown amid warring royal brothers, shifting alliances and brutal betrayals. The story opens with the ageing King Harald Fairhair nearing death, leaving his sons to fight over the succession.
At Erik's side is his wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, portrayed by Madsen as an ambitious and politically sharp partner in his quest for power. A key threat comes from Erik's younger brother Haakon, raised in Christian Wessex under the protection of King Athelstan, who returns to Norway backed by an English fleet — a rivalry that also sets old Norse pagan traditions against the spread of Christianity.
Season 2 already in the works
In a notable vote of confidence, Prime Video has already renewed Bloodaxe for a second season before the first has aired. Season 2 is currently in production in Ireland, with the first season shot at Ashford Studios — the same production base used for the original Vikings series. Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers, with the series produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios.
The ensemble cast also includes Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen. The first season will stream in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
