Hurricane Isaias, now downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, has killed at least four people and left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power across Florida, Alabama and western Georgia, authorities said Saturday.
Death toll and damage
Two people were killed in Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey said Saturday, and two more died in Escambia County, Florida, according to the county sheriff's office. In Florida, one death came late Friday night after a large tree fell on a home, pinning the victim underneath; another person was found deceased in a closed garage where a generator was running, while four other family members were hospitalised for non-life-threatening treatment. No victims were publicly identified.
Power and recovery
Trees and power lines were down across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, forcing road closures. More than 426,000 homes and businesses were without power as of 3 p.m. ET Saturday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said. Florida Power and Light said it expected to restore 95% of affected customers who can safely accept power by the end of Monday, October 12. A curfew remained in effect for Santa Rosa County from dusk until dawn.
The storm's path
Isaias roared ashore as a Category 2 hurricane late Friday evening near Destin, Florida, with winds of about 105 mph — ending a two-year drought of US hurricane landfalls since Hurricane Milton in October 2024. As of 5 p.m. ET Saturday, the post-tropical storm's centre was about five miles west of Birmingham, Alabama, moving northeast at 15 mph, and was expected to reach the Tennessee Valley before weakening further. The US Energy Department authorised an emergency exchange of up to 4 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to address storm-related supply disruptions.
