PM Modi Completes 25 Years as Head of Government; Vice President and Ministers Hail Milestone

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday completed 25 years of uninterrupted service as a head of government, a journey that began with his swearing-in as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001 and carried him through three consecutive terms as Prime Minister since 2014.

The milestone drew greetings from across the country's top leadership. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, writing on X, called the lifting of 25 crore people out of extreme poverty the "greatest achievement" of Modi's leadership, describing it as a landmark historical achievement. The Union Cabinet on Tuesday passed a formal resolution congratulating the Prime Minister on his quarter-century of continuous leadership.

Praise from cabinet colleagues

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Modi's 25 years of service had become synonymous with the welfare of the poor, the empowerment of women, the upliftment of youth and the prosperity of every section of society, adding that he had transformed the definition of governance through people-centric policies and firm decision-making.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh noted that Modi served as Gujarat Chief Minister for 13 years and has been Prime Minister for the past 12, and said India had emerged as the world's fourth-largest economy while development had grown more inclusive. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Education Minister Pralhad Joshi, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal also posted greetings, hailing his journey from a party worker with no political family to the country's top office.

A milestone marked with prayer and rallies

Modi marked the day by visiting the Shri Vinayak Mandir in Sarojini Nagar, Delhi, where he offered prayers to Lord Ganesha. Commemorative events were also held across the country, including the Seva Sankalp Bike Rally that culminated in Varanasi.

The Prime Minister took over Gujarat's top job in 2001 from Keshubhai Patel, at a time when the state was still recovering from the devastating Bhuj earthquake. He led Gujarat until May 2014 before moving to national politics.
