New Delhi: India's automobile industry posted strong September sales, with domestic passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rising 21.8 per cent year-on-year to 4,54,574 units, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Thursday. Dispatches stood at 3,73,347 units in September last year.
Broad-based growth
Two-wheeler dispatches climbed 13.5 per cent to 24,63,103 units from 21,70,100 units a year earlier, while three-wheeler dispatches rose 16 per cent to 98,162 units from 84,635 units. The industry also recorded its highest-ever second-quarter sales across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers.
Utility vehicles continued to dominate passenger vehicle sales, accounting for nearly 68 per cent of the segment and growing 34.2 per cent in the quarter. Commercial vehicle wholesales rose 28.7 per cent to 3,09,063 units during the July-September quarter, with medium and heavy commercial vehicles outpacing light commercial vehicles.
What drove the surge
"The Indian automotive industry delivered a strong performance in the first half of FY2026-27, following a robust second quarter and a strong September 2026," said SIAM president Shenu Agarwal. The industry body credited improved affordability following GST 2.0, resilient rural and urban demand, strong financing support, new product offerings, infrastructure-led freight movement and healthy festive buying.
