Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday set a target of building a USD 500-billion economy in the state over the next decade, unveiling 46 industrial projects worth approximately Rs 40,000 crore at a ceremony in Jajpur. The push is aimed at making Odisha eastern India's primary manufacturing hub.

46 projects, 42,500 direct jobs

The projects — for which Majhi both inaugurated completed units and laid foundation stones — span steel, renewable energy, food processing, textiles, chemicals, logistics, tourism, IT and electronics. They are projected to create 42,500 direct jobs and "more than double that number" in indirect employment, according to the state government.

"Our government aims to make Odisha eastern India's manufacturing hub and expand its economy to at least USD 500 billion over the next decade," the chief minister said.

Two years of industrial momentum

Majhi said 151 projects have been grounded or inaugurated in under two years, representing investments of over Rs 3.11 lakh crore with employment potential for more than 2.4 lakh people. The state's single-window and high-level clearance authorities — SLSWCA and HLCA — have cleared 560 industrial proposals with aggregate investment exceeding Rs 12.07 lakh crore, capable of generating upwards of 6.96 lakh jobs.

The announcement continues a run of industrial-policy moves from the state government, which has been positioning Odisha as a manufacturing alternative on the country's east coast across heavy industry, renewables and electronics.
