Upscale AI, a startup valued at $2 billion, on Thursday launched a networking platform that lets customers build data centres using artificial intelligence chips from different suppliers, according to Reuters.
Called Token Fabric, the platform combines hardware and software to connect AI processors across a data centre without requiring customers to integrate separate networking systems.
Why it matters
Upscale is betting on growing demand from neoclouds and large cloud providers that are building out data centres and want to use chips from multiple suppliers, rather than being locked into a single vendor's networking stack.
The aim of the system is to keep expensive AI chips working instead of sitting idle while waiting for data, helping customers extract more value from their investment.
What the platform combines
Token Fabric brings together Upscale's own networking chips, equipment using Nvidia's Spectrum-X technology, and software designed to identify bottlenecks and flag equipment that may need replacing, the company said.
Chief executive Barun Kar said he expects Token Fabric to generate revenue next year in the tens of millions of dollars, potentially reaching the low hundreds of millions.
Rollout and backers
Upscale plans to release the first part of Token Fabric, which connects groups of AI chips across a data centre, in the fourth quarter, with the full platform rolling out in stages through 2027.
The startup is backed by Nvidia, Salesforce and Singapore state investor Temasek. In June it raised a $190 million extension to its early-stage funding round, taking its total funding to $500 million. The financing was led by Premji Invest, the investment unit of Indian billionaire Azim Premji.
