North Korea Is Testing 'Swarm Attacks' Mixing Drones, Missiles and Artillery, WSJ Reports

North Korea has conducted first-of-their-kind military exercises this month combining attack drones, nuclear-capable missiles, rockets and long-range artillery into integrated "swarm" attacks, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 27, citing the country's state media.

According to the report, the drills were described by North Korean state media as producing concentrated fire meant to decimate enemy forces. The exercises mark the first time Pyongyang has practised such integrated swarm tactics, which analysts say could sharply complicate air-defence planning in the region.

A busy fortnight of tests

The swarm drills cap a busy fortnight for North Korea's weapons programmes. On September 20, the country fired a pair of purported hypersonic missiles that state media said flew at more than Mach 5 and changed direction in flight, claiming a boost to its precision strike capability. Then, on September 24, Pyongyang said it had test-fired updated 240mm shells for its multiple-launch rocket systems, fitted with unmanned "pinpoint" guidance, alongside a demonstration of concentrated fire from several launchers attended by Kim Jong Un.

Why it matters

Ankit Panda of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace told the Journal that integrated salvo tactics — of the kind seen in the Ukraine war and in the recent Iran conflict — could "change the air defence arithmetic substantially," because a wave of low-cost drones arriving alongside missiles forces defenders to expend expensive interceptors on cheap targets.

South Korean and Western officials are watching the drills closely. Pyongyang has spent recent years chasing more precise, survivable strike options, and the swarm exercises suggest it is studying how modern conflicts actually unfold, not just displaying hardware for show. What remains unclear is how deeply the new tactics have been integrated into North Korea's operational plans, rather than staged for state media.
