Nokia on Monday announced a new flexible line card that lets telecom operators run multiple generations of fiber broadband technology on a single port, a move the Finnish company says will help networks keep pace with the artificial intelligence era.
Unveiled in Espoo, Finland, the new line card supports GPON, 10G, 25G and 50G PON on every port, making Nokia the first vendor with a 16-port solution covering all four generations. Operators can deploy the technology their market needs today and add or change generations on the same port and the same fiber as demand evolves, without committing capacity in advance or adding new hardware.
Built for the AI era
The high-density card is built on Nokia's in-house Quillion chipset and multi-PON optical modules, unlocking mass-market fiber access speeds of up to 50Gbps. Nokia says the solution delivers quantum-safe encryption and authentication to protect network and user data, up to four times lower upstream latency for data-intensive applications, and end-to-end resilience with no single point of failure.
"The future of broadband is becoming harder to predict. AI is reshaping traffic patterns and creating new expectations for bandwidth, latency, security and reliability," said Maryam Chaudry, senior vice president and general manager of Fixed Networks at Nokia. "With our new line card, operators do not have to bet everything on a single path."
Industry analysts said the approach lowers the risk of upgrading fiber networks. "Flexibility is becoming just as important as performance," said Jeff Heynen, vice president for broadband access and home networking at Dell'Oro Group, adding that supporting multiple PON generations on every port gives operators a practical, lower-risk path to evolve their fiber networks as demand develops.
The new multi-PON solution is planned for general availability in 2027.
