Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia and satellite firm Iceye will jointly develop satellite communications systems for government users, the two companies said in a statement on Thursday, marking a new partnership aimed at defence, border security, emergency services and disaster response.

The systems are being designed to support government missions ranging from military and border-security operations to emergency response and disaster relief, according to the announcement reported by Reuters.

What the partnership covers

The collaboration brings together Nokia's communications technology with Iceye's satellite capabilities to build space-based connectivity systems tailored for public-sector and security customers. The companies said the systems would serve governments requiring resilient communications for missions where terrestrial networks may be unavailable or compromised.

The announcement reflects the growing convergence of the commercial space industry and defence communications, as governments increasingly look to satellite constellations for secure, always-on connectivity.
