Nobel Peace Prize Due Today as Trump Makes Fresh Case for the Honour

Oslo: The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced today, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee set to reveal its choice at 11 am local time (2.30 pm IST) at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes will read out the decision, capping one of the most closely watched prizes of the Nobel season.

According to the committee, 287 candidates are in the running this year, comprising 208 individuals and 79 organisations. In line with tradition, the committee has not confirmed any names, and public speculation about nominees should be treated with caution.

Trump makes his case

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump used an Oval Office meeting with reporters to press his claim to the prize, saying it would be "a great discredit" to the committee if his record were overlooked. Trump said he had helped settle eight conflicts since returning to the White House, and cited diplomatic interventions involving Cambodia and Thailand, Armenia and Azerbaijan, India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, as well as disputes in the Middle East.

Trump also renewed his criticism of former president Barack Obama's 2009 Peace Prize, saying Obama had received it early in his first term without having done anything to earn it. He referred to last year's laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who later presented her Nobel medal to Trump at the White House. The Norwegian Nobel Institute has clarified that the prize itself cannot be revoked or transferred to another person, even though laureates may do as they wish with the prize money.

Names in the conversation

Public discussion ahead of the announcement has mentioned figures including Pope Leo XIV, Russia's Yulia Navalnaya and UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, along with Sudan's volunteer Emergency Response Rooms. Supporters of 2023 laureate Narges Mohammadi have also raised alarm over the jailed Iranian activist's health after she suffered a heart attack in prison.

The prize ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
