Vidyut Jammwal has revealed that he did not hire an agent in the United States or chase Hollywood opportunities before landing his role in the upcoming film Street Fighter — the offer came to him after the film's director studied his work and reached out directly.
In an exclusive interview published by News18 on October 12, the Commando star said director Kitao Sakurai had watched most of his interviews and films before getting in touch. "His research is what led him to me, and that's what destiny has done," Jammwal said. "I got a call from these guys and I got to speak to the director. We had a lot of chats." He auditioned just once, and soon after found himself on the film's sets.
Dhalsim to the T
Jammwal plays Dhalsim, the mystical yogi from Capcom's long-running video game series, in the ensemble film that also stars Noah Centineo, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and Jason Momoa. He said he was struck by the effort Sakurai's team put into finding the right actor. "I feel good about the fact that there was a hunt for somebody who they believed could play Dhalsim to the T. The effort they put in to find me was incredible," he said.
The actor also credited Priyanka Chopra for paving the way for Indian performers in Hollywood. "I can mention Priyanka Chopra for sure. What she has done for the country is incredible in terms of cinema," he said, adding that director Sakurai knew more about India and the martial art kalaripayattu than many Indians.
Back in 2019, Jammwal's Junglee director Chuck Russell had said Hollywood franchises would be lucky to have him, yet the actor said he received no calls for international films before Street Fighter. "It just did," he said of how the opportunity arrived.
