New Zealand have named Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra in split squads for the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, with white-ball captain Mitchell Santner set to lead the side. The series begins on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland.
Split-squad plan for a packed schedule
With a two-Test series against India beginning at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on November 19, the selectors have announced different combinations for the first three and the final two ODIs. Several Test specialists — including Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Ravindra and Nathan Smith — will feature in the opening three matches before withdrawing to focus on red-ball preparations.
Seven players — Allen, Kristian Clarke, Matt Fisher, Ferguson, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly and Seifert — will join the team for the final two ODIs. Only six players — Santner, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Blair Tickner and Will Young — are named for all five matches.
Key returns and injury absentees
Ravindra returns after recovering from the shoulder injury that ruled him out of New Zealand's T20I squad, and Chapman is also back after a hamstring issue. Allen and Ferguson return to the ODI setup for the first time since 2023 — Ferguson's most recent appearance came in the World Cup semi-final against India in Mumbai — while Seifert last played an ODI around 18 months ago during New Zealand's home series against Pakistan.
Zak Foulkes (hip flexor), Will O'Rourke (calf) and Ben Sears (ankle) were not considered for selection as they continue their rehabilitation.
Context
The ODIs follow a five-match T20I series scheduled from October 22 to November 1. New Zealand will look to build on their historic 2-1 ODI series victory in India earlier this year — their first bilateral ODI series triumph on Indian soil. Head coach Rob Walter said the series would provide valuable preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
