Mumbai: Netflix has released the first trailer for "The Altruists", an eight-episode limited series dramatising the rise and collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. All eight episodes will stream on the platform from November 19, 2026.
Anthony Boyle plays FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, while Julia Garner portrays Caroline Ellison, the former head of FTX's affiliated trading firm Alameda Research. The trailer, which Netflix shared on October 8, traces the pair from their early ambitions to the empire's spectacular unravelling.
Gen Z's Bonnie and Clyde
Netflix describes the central figures as "two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists" who set out to remake the global financial system — before being accused of stealing $8 billion. The platform has billed the pair as Gen Z's own Bonnie and Clyde.
The series is created by Graham Moore, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game, who co-runs the show with Jacqueline Hoyt. It draws on New York Magazine reporting on the scandal, and the cast also includes Alex Lawther, Karan Soni, Paul Reiser and Robin Weigert. Moore has said the story examines how two committed idealists persuaded themselves — and each other — that their compromises were justified, until shared rationalisation turned into systematic wrongdoing.
The real case behind the drama
Bankman-Fried was convicted in November 2023 on fraud and conspiracy charges and sentenced to 25 years in prison; he has since sought a review of his conviction. Ellison pleaded guilty, testified as a key prosecution witness and received a two-year sentence after cooperating with investigators. Prosecutors said more than $8 billion in customer funds was misused before FTX's November 2022 collapse.
The dramatisation arrives while the legal aftermath is still unfolding — and while Hollywood's appetite for crypto-era stories shows no sign of fading.
