Colleagues and admirers of veteran actor Nana Patekar gathered in Mumbai on Wednesday for a prayer meet held in his memory, six days after he passed away at the age of 75. The meet, titled 'Aathvanilya Nana', was organised at the P.L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy complex in Prabhadevi.
Several personalities from the Marathi film industry attended the gathering, including actors Shivaji Satam and Rohini Hattangadi, filmmaker Sanjay Jadhav and director Mehul Kumar. A special rangoli drawn at the entrance of the venue caught attention — the artwork depicted Patekar's character from his iconic Marathi film 'Natsamrat', a visual tribute to one of his most celebrated performances.
A career that spanned decades
Patekar, known for intense performances in films across Hindi and Marathi cinema including 'Krantiveer' and 'Khamoshi: The Musical', was rushed from his home in Dona Paula, near Panaji, Goa, to a private hospital in the early hours of October 8. He could not be revived despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation administered for about 45 minutes and was declared dead at 5:10 a.m.
Autopsy confirms natural cause
The post-mortem report, prepared by doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, confirmed that the actor died of a heart attack caused by a blood clot blocking the left main coronary artery, which supplies blood to a large part of the heart. The report classified the cause as a natural one, ruling out foul play.
Patekar was cremated with full state honours at his farmhouse in Donje village in Pune district, where he was accorded a three-gun salute. Members of the film fraternity, including Jackie Shroff, directors Anil Sharma and Anees Bazmee and producer Firoz Nadiadwala, attended the funeral.
