Pune, Oct 8: Veteran actor Nana Patekar was cremated with full state honours on Thursday evening at his farmhouse in Donje village on the outskirts of Pune, as Maharashtra bid farewell to one of the most celebrated performers of Indian cinema.
The Maharashtra government decided to accord the actor a state funeral in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to Marathi theatre and Marathi and Hindi cinema. Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced the decision, noting that Patekar had carved out a distinct identity across a career that refused to be boxed in.
Final journey to Donje
Patekar, 75, died early Thursday morning at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to hospital but could not be revived despite about 45 minutes of continuous CPR, according to doctors at the facility.
His body was taken to the Goa Medical College near Panaji for a post-mortem before being transported to Maharashtra. Ganesh Thorat, CEO of the actor’s Naam Foundation, said the mortal remains reached Pune by the evening and were kept for the last darshan before the final rites at the farmhouse.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally spoke with Patekar’s son Malhar, offering condolences and assuring the family of the government’s full support. Fadnavis later paid floral tributes at Pune airport when the mortal remains arrived, while Deputy Chief Ministers and senior state leaders attended the last rites at Donje.
A towering legacy
A three-time National Film Award winner and a recipient of the Padma Shri, Patekar was known for his intensity, individuality and powerful screen presence. His notable films include Parinda, Prahaar: The Final Act, Krantiveer and Khamoshi: The Musical, and his final screen appearance will be in Shakti Shalini, part of the Maddock horror-comedy universe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death, saying the actor’s versatility and creativity gave audiences characters that would be remembered for generations.
