Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin held wide-ranging bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Monday, the first day of the Swiss leader's three-day State visit to India. The two sides reviewed cooperation across trade, technology, defence and energy, and signed a clutch of new agreements covering transport, migration and professional mobility.
Talks on day one of the State visit
Parmelin arrived in India for the October 5-7 State visit and was given a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan before sitting down with Modi for the delegation-level talks. He also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar earlier in the day. It is Parmelin's first State visit to India, though he has travelled to the country once before this year, for February's AI Impact Summit.
Trade pact anniversary at the centre
A major theme of the visit was the India-EFTA trade and economic partnership agreement, which entered into force about a year ago. Parmelin's trip effectively marks the first anniversary of the pact, and both sides used the occasion to take stock of how trade and investment flows under the deal are progressing.
New pacts signed
According to the reports, the two sides signed agreements on transport, mobility and infrastructure, a migration and mobility partnership, and a programme for young professionals, alongside joint research initiatives in health, clean energy and space. Defence cooperation — including military exchanges and defence production — and collaboration in nuclear energy, science and technology and artificial intelligence were also on the agenda.
