Kylian Mbappe has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee, Real Madrid announced on Saturday, after the France captain was forced off during Friday night's Nations League match against Turkey.

Mbappe, 27, scored the winner in France's 1-0 victory but was treated after the goal and, after briefly returning to the pitch, went down again and was unable to continue. He was replaced in the 58th minute of what was Zinedine Zidane's first game in charge of the national team.

The French Football Federation initially described the injury as a knee tendon problem and sent Mbappe back to Madrid for further assessment. Saturday's medical tests at Real Madrid delivered the fuller diagnosis: a hyperextension injury to the posterior capsule of the left knee.

Mbappe has now left the France squad and will miss the remainder of the international window. Real Madrid's next match is at home to Villarreal in LaLiga on October 10, giving him a fortnight to recover before club football resumes.

The injury is a fresh blow for a France side adjusting to new leadership under Zidane, who opened his tenure with a narrow win thanks to his captain's decisive strike — only to lose that same captain to injury moments later.
