Lindsay Lohan treated fans to a special social media post on Saturday, Oct. 3 — celebrated online as Mean Girls Day — teaming up with the film's director, Mark Waters, to re-create the classroom scene that started the annual tradition.

In the original 2004 comedy, a voiceover has Lohan's character, Cady Heron, recall: "On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was." Her crush, Aaron Samuels, played by Jonathan Bennett, turns around in his classroom seat — and the answer, "It's October 3rd," became one of cinema's most quoted dates.

The re-enactment

Lohan and Waters filmed their version of the scene on Saturday morning and posted it on TikTok, Instagram and X, sharing a laugh afterward. The response was immediate: the clip drew more than four million views on TikTok, over two million on X, and 1.4 million likes on Instagram.

Bennett himself noticed. Commenting on the Instagram post, he wrote: "This made me miss you two so much!"

A new project together

The reunion is also a preview of things to come. Lohan and Waters are currently working on a new romantic film for Netflix titled "Return to You," which stars Lohan alongside Henry Golding. Waters, who also directed "Freaky Friday" starring Lohan, will direct the new film, with Lohan producing.

The original "Mean Girls," written by Tina Fey, follows homeschooled Cady Heron as she transfers to a high school dominated by the all-girl clique known as the Plastics, played by Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried. Two decades on, it remains a fixture of pop culture, supplying endless memes from "You go, Glen Coco!" to "Stop trying to make fetch happen."

Bennett told USA TODAY that the film endures because high school never really changes — the jocks, the band kids, the theater nerds are the same in every generation. And every October 3, they all come back to North Shore High.
