Kim Jong-un Attends Low-Key 81st Workers' Party Anniversary Performance, Issues No Formal Statement

New Delhi/Pyongyang: North Korea marked the 81st founding anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea on October 10 with a deliberately subdued celebration — a stage performance at Pyongyang Indoor Stadium attended by leader Kim Jong-un, state media reported. There was no military parade, no weapons showcase, and no formal statement from the leader.

A celebratory performance, not a parade

The event featured patriotic songs, acrobatics, and dance, with the programme built around themes of loyalty to the party and its leader, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Kim, described by the agency as representing the "dignity and mightiness" of the country, waved to the audience as a token of congratulations and expressed satisfaction with the performance. Photographs released by KCNA showed him accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju and daughter Kim Ju-ae. Diplomatic envoys, foreign mission members, senior party and military officials, and Pyongyang citizens were also in attendance.

Analysts note the contrast

The restraint stands in sharp contrast to last year's 80th anniversary, when North Korea staged a massive late-night military parade at Kim Il Sung Square at which the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile was publicly unveiled. Pyongyang traditionally reserves its grandest displays — large parades, mass gymnastics, weapons exhibitions — for anniversaries ending in zero or five, which it designates as milestone years. A separate KCNA dispatch reported that party officials visited the Party Founding Museum, where they were briefed on Kim's visit there in October 2025.

Observers will now watch whether the relatively subdued tone signals a diplomatic opening or is simply a function of the non-milestone year, as international scrutiny of North Korea's weapons programmes and its reported military cooperation with Russia continues. The Workers' Party of Korea was founded on October 10, 1945.
