MUMBAI: Bollywood and Formula 1 collided this week in one of the most talked-about pop-culture crossovers of the year, as Kareena Kapoor Khan sat down with McLaren driver Lando Norris for a special video collaboration titled "Tea Break", facilitated by Google Android.
McLaren Racing formally welcomed Kareena into its global community on October 9, announcing her as "the newest member of the Papaya Family" — the team's name for its worldwide fan network — before Google India released glimpses of the conversation, recorded on the sidelines of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Masala chai, hand gestures and a racing quiz
In the video, Kareena introduces the British driver to distinctly Indian customs, serving him a cup of masala chai — Norris admits he is not much of a tea drinker — teaching him popular Indian hand gestures including the namaste, and quizzing him on McLaren's racing history in a rapid-fire round.
The exchange took its funniest turn when Kareena brought up her husband Saif Ali Khan's racing credentials, joking that Saif's character in the 2007 Bollywood film Ta Ra Rum Pum had won a racing world championship "19 years ago". Norris, clearly amused, replied: "So, we're the same, basically."
Norris, 26, has raced for McLaren since his Formula 1 debut in 2018 and won the 2025 World Drivers' Championship. The visit also carried a family touch: the driver signed a customised McLaren jersey "For Jeh baba" for Kareena's younger son Jehangir.
Why it matters
The collaboration underlines how global brands are pairing Indian cinema icons with international sporting properties to reach younger audiences. On the work front, Kareena was last seen headlining the Meghna Gulzar-directed investigative drama Daayra, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, a film the makers say is inspired by true events.
