Jammu Breaks 71-Year October Rainfall Record as 185.6 mm Falls in Three Hours; Flash Floods Kill at Least One

Lede: Jammu received 185.6 mm of rain in just three hours on Sunday, shattering a 71-year October rainfall record and triggering flash floods, landslides and widespread waterlogging that killed at least one person and left another feared swept away, officials said.

Heavy rain that began around 8.30 am inundated roads and residential localities across Jammu, damaging vehicles and disrupting traffic, officials said. The previous October record of 160 mm was set in 1955.

Deaths and rescue operations
The body of a man suspected to have drowned in a flooded stream was recovered from the Domana area on Sunday evening, according to officials. His identity and the exact cause of death had not yet been established at the time of reporting.

Separately, a 27-year-old woman from the Raipur Domana area went missing after she was swept away by flash floods while trying to save her husband, who had gone to move their parked car amid the rising water, officials said. The man survived by clinging to an object, but the woman remained untraced despite search operations by locals, police and State Disaster Response Force teams. One report said the deceased was identified as a man whose motorcycle was recovered from a canal near Purkhoo; officials in other accounts said the identity was yet to be confirmed.

City disrupted
Waterlogging hit several localities, including Panjtirthi, Nagrota, Roop Nagar, Janipur, Dogra Chowk, Durga Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Raipur Domana, inundating houses and shops and disrupting traffic, officials said. Landslides were reported on the Panjtirthi-Sidrah and Sidrah-Nagrota road stretches. Residents reported damage to cars and two-wheelers, and videos circulated on social media showed rainwater rushing through narrow lanes into homes and shops.

The deluge also sent the maximum temperature plunging to 23.3 degrees Celsius, nine degrees below normal, officials said.
