Jalen Duren has agreed to a five-year, $200 million contract extension with the Detroit Pistons, ending a months-long restricted free agency standoff just about 90 minutes before the midnight deadline on a one-year qualifying offer, a person with knowledge of the agreement confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday night.
The deal is fully guaranteed and contains no team or player options, ESPN and The Athletic reported, citing agent Chafie Fields. Because the Pistons had not yet announced the signing, the AP source spoke on condition of anonymity.
A tense negotiation
The 22-year-old center, an All-Star and All-NBA third-team selection last season, had threatened to accept the one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 — a move that could have let Detroit's franchise cornerstone walk for nothing. Duren was not on the Pistons' initial training camp roster while talks dragged on.
NBC Sports reported the negotiation grew "noxious" at points, with Detroit offering less than Duren sought partly out of dissatisfaction with his playoff performance. Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 65 percent shooting in the regular season — career highs that made him eligible for a deal worth up to $287 million — but slipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as top-seeded Detroit lost in seven games to Cleveland in the second round.
Core locked in
The agreement gives Detroit long-term clarity after the club recently reached a five-year, $155 million extension with Ausar Thompson. Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Duren would be "welcomed with opened arms" regardless of the outcome.
Duren has averaged 13.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists across his first four NBA seasons, all with Detroit.
