The wait is over for Rajinikanth fans. Sun Pictures on Monday unveiled the trailer of Jailer 2, superstar Rajinikanth's most-awaited action entertainer, ten days before the film's worldwide theatrical release on October 15.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel picks up the story of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer played by Rajinikanth, who had stepped away from his violent past at the end of the 2023 blockbuster.
A battalion of new enemies
The nearly three-minute trailer shows that the villains of the first film have returned with reinforcements. A battalion of adversaries — played by Suraj Venjaramoodu, SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty — is now after Muthuvel. The trailer opens with Venjaramoodu's character interrogating a hostage about the destruction wreaked over the past two months, while no one seems able to locate Tiger.
The twist: Muthuvel has deliberately gone off the radar, disguising himself as a driver in a remote village to find out whether the chain of command among his enemies goes higher up. A new group referred to in the trailer as the Kalpaks warns that it "will not allow anyone to live," and Muthuvel promises, in his trademark style, to turn his enemies to toast.
Familiar faces, bigger scale
The trailer confirms the return of Mohanlal as Matthew, Shiva Rajkumar as Narasimha and Jackie Shroff as Kamdev, alongside Yogi Babu and Jaffer Sadiq from the first film. Vidya Balan makes her Tamil cinema debut with this film. SJ Suryah appears to be a key antagonist, though the exact nature of his character is kept under wraps.
The action has clearly been scaled up for the sequel, while Nelson appears to have retained the mix of violence and dark humour that worked for Jailer, which went on to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R Nirmal.
