Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 opens in theatres across India on Thursday, October 15, riding one of the biggest pre-sale waves Indian cinema has seen this year. The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel clocked domestic advance bookings of Rs 38.09 crore gross, according to trade figures reported by The Week.
Sacnilk data cited in the reports put the tally at Rs 33.10 crore excluding blocked seats, with 19.84 lakh tickets sold across 19,675 shows in 397 cities. Opening-day advance sales alone stood at Rs 21.75 crore. The Tamil version accounts for the bulk of the business at Rs 33.95 crore - roughly 89 per cent - followed by Telugu at Rs 3.58 crore. Chennai leads the markets with Rs 12.35 crore from 7.06 lakh tickets, ahead of Bengaluru at Rs 4.27 crore. Kerala is tracking ahead of the first Jailer on pre-sales, powered by the Mohanlal factor, with distribution by Sree Gokulam Movies. The film releases in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.
Nelson on the sequel and the cameos
Nelson Dilipkumar, who directed the 2023 original, has said Jailer 2 has a different structure and template from the first film, calling it a wholesome entertainer that will give audiences a new experience.
The director confirmed that the much-discussed cameos by Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff will be limited but entertaining, with every moment flowing with the story. Cameos by Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi are also expected. The film's ensemble includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan in key roles.
The story follows retired police officer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, whose peaceful life is upended when a powerful group seeks revenge for Varma's demise - forcing him to go undercover as a driver.
Multiplex standoff and court protection
The Hindi-dubbed version will not screen at PVR INOX or Cinepolis chains after a disagreement over the streaming window - producers reportedly agreed to about four weeks while the chains insisted on eight. The Hindi release goes ahead via Pen Marudhar Entertainment through Miraj, Wave, MovieTime and single screens.
On October 13, the Madras High Court granted an interim injunction banning unauthorised screenings of the film after Sun TV Network filed a copyright suit, with a John Doe order against unknown infringers.
