Israeli Jets and Artillery Strike Southern Lebanon Despite US-Brokered Framework Deal

Israeli warplanes and artillery shelled multiple areas of southern Lebanon on Saturday, October 10, in strikes that came despite a United States-brokered framework agreement reached between Beirut and Tel Aviv in June, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency.

Lebanese media reported that Israeli jets raided the area between the towns of Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Tebnit in the Nabatieh governorate. Artillery fire also targeted the outskirts of Haddatha and Baraachit, as well as the Wadi al-Saluki and Wadi al-Hujair valleys. The outskirts of Maifadoun and Kfar Tebnit came under intense bombardment, with further shelling directed at Haddatha in the Bint Jbeil district. Israeli drones were additionally seen flying at low altitude over Baalbek and towns across the South Lebanon governorate.

No casualties reported in Saturday's raids

As of the reports on Saturday, there were no immediate accounts of casualties or damage from the strikes between Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Tebnit. Lebanon's health ministry figures released on September 25 put the toll of Israel's campaign, which began on March 2, at 4,386 killed and 12,413 wounded.

Friday's drone strike near the Syrian border

A day earlier, an Israeli drone strike targeting a car in Lebanon's Hermel district, near the Syrian border, wounded six people, Lebanon's health ministry said — five Syrian nationals, including two women, and one Lebanese national. Israel's military said it had struck a Syrian militant who, it alleged, operated under Iranian direction and was planning attacks on Israeli forces in southern Syria.

Since the ouster of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria and deployed troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone in the Golan Heights. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa criticised Israeli actions in his address to the UN General Assembly last month, warning they threatened his country's post-war recovery.

What the framework deal covered

On June 26, Beirut and Tel Aviv reached a US-sponsored framework agreement in Washington. Despite that agreement, Israel has continued near-daily military operations in both Lebanon and Syria, saying it will maintain troops in what it describes as security zones along its borders.
