IndiGo Diverts Delhi–Chennai Flight to Hyderabad After Smoke Detected From Passenger's Electronic Device

An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday after smoke was detected coming from a passenger's personal electronic device, the airline said. The aircraft landed safely and the crew brought the situation under control without any evacuation.

IndiGo flight 6E 6115, operating the Delhi–Chennai sector on October 11, 2026, was rerouted after smoke was noticed onboard, the airline said in a statement. The cabin crew acted promptly and the flight touched down at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, where IndiGo said arrangements were being made for an alternate aircraft to carry passengers onward to Chennai.

In its statement, the airline said it regretted the inconvenience caused to its customers by the "unforeseen situation" and that it was making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates.

Cause under check

IndiGo did not specify the exact type of device involved, describing it only as a customer's personal electronic device. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show a minor fire and smoke coming from an overhead bin on the flight, but Hindustan Times reported it could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.

Why airlines are strict about electronic devices

Airlines across the world keep a strict watch on electronic devices carried into cabins. Power banks, spare batteries and similar items are barred from checked-in baggage because their lithium-ion cells can catch fire. IndiGo's own guidelines say power banks "must remain within the passenger's personal reach at all times" — such as under the seat, in the seat pocket or carried on the person.

The incident follows a similar scare earlier this year. In May, a suspected power bank explosion aboard a Hyderabad–Chandigarh flight filled the cabin with thick smoke and led to a full-scale emergency evacuation of more than 200 passengers, including two infants, and six airline staff through inflatable slides, according to Hindustan Times.
