The Indian Navy will commission Samarthak, its first indigenously built multi-purpose vessel, at the Naval Base in Karwar on October 16, the Press Information Bureau announced on Tuesday. Built by Larsen and Toubro under the Make in India initiative, Samarthak is the first of four multi-purpose vessels being inducted into the Navy and marks another milestone in India's drive for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
A 'utility' ship for multiple roles
Designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol, Samarthak is built to switch between a wide range of missions. According to the Defence Ministry, the vessel can undertake low-intensity maritime operations, serve as a platform for target deployment and trials, and function as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems. It is also equipped for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, can be converted into a limited hospital ship, and can support salvage operations.
Its integrated combat suite combines indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems specifically optimised for operations in challenging maritime conditions, the ministry said.
Crest and motto
The ship's crest features the Indian elephant emerging from the waves, symbolising strength, intelligence and agility. Its motto is "Victory is Our Sole Aim". The Navy's spokesperson unveiled the crest on social media ahead of the commissioning.
