India to Host First World Landslide Forum in Faridabad From November 23

India will host the World Landslide Forum for the first time this November, with the seventh edition of the global gathering scheduled from November 23 to 27 at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Faridabad, in the Delhi-NCR region. The announcement marks a milestone for the country, which becomes the fifth nation to stage the prestigious event.

Organised under the aegis of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) in collaboration with UNESCO and other international bodies, the World Landslide Forum is a triennial event that has previously been held in Tokyo, Rome, Beijing, Ljubljana, Kyoto and Florence. The Faridabad edition is expected to draw scientists, engineers, practitioners and policymakers from around the world for discussions on landslide science, early-warning systems and disaster-risk reduction.

Theme and focus areas

The theme for this year's forum is "Landslide Science and Practice for Safe and Resilient Communities." Sessions will emphasise disaster-risk reduction, remote sensing, hazard mapping and mitigation strategies, with the programme designed to connect scientific research with on-the-ground policy and practice.

Pre-conference workshops on November 22 will take up emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital twins and satellite-based monitoring, setting the stage for the main deliberations. Collaborating organisations for the Indian edition include the Geological Survey of India, the National Disaster Management Authority and the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Why it matters for India

India is counted among the world's most landslide-prone countries, with the Himalayan belt and parts of the Western Ghats reporting damaging slope failures nearly every monsoon. Bringing the forum to Faridabad puts the spotlight on the need for better monitoring networks, early-warning systems and land-use planning in vulnerable hill regions.

The forum is also expected to showcase Indian advances in landslide monitoring technology and hazard assessment, while giving domestic researchers and disaster-management agencies a platform to engage directly with global experts.
