The India-Pakistan men's cricket final and hockey semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games were the most-watched matches in the history of the Games, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said on Sunday, underscoring the pulling power of the subcontinent's fiercest sporting rivalry.
Record audiences for the rivalry
"The broadcast had the biggest viewership ever for the Games. Thanks to two big matches: yesterday, the Pakistan-India cricket match was the most-viewed match, and the day before (on Thursday), the Pakistan-India hockey match was the most-viewed match ever in the Games' history," OCA Coordination Committee President Tayyab Ikram said at a press conference.
India beat Pakistan 4-3 in the men's hockey semifinal at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, then went on to win the gold medal by defeating Malaysia in the final — a triumph that also secured the team a place at the Los Angeles Olympics. A day later, India edged Pakistan by 19 runs in the men's cricket final to defend its Asian Games title. Ikram did not release viewership figures and did not say which of the two matches drew the larger audience.
OCA defends the Games
Ikram cited 212 records broken at the Games as proof that athletes were provided the "best environment" in the Aichi-Nagoya edition, and highlighted what he described as the OCA's first-ever safeguarding principle at an Asian Games. "For the very first time, the OCA demonstrated a safeguarding principle in these Games. From all aspects it was a safe Games — for athletes, for Asian federations and for the National Olympic Committees," he said.
The remarks came as organisers faced criticism over logistical chaos, including the decision to scrap a traditional Athletes' Village in favour of hotel rooms, temporary wooden containers and a cruise ship for around 17,000 athletes and officials. Ikram acknowledged that mega multi-sport events always face operational challenges.
