India Calls Out Pakistan's 'Doublespeak' on Terrorism at UN, Questions Azhar Reward Announcement

India has called out Pakistan's "doublespeak" on terrorism at the United Nations, accusing Islamabad of trying to gloss over its state support for terror by announcing a reward for the capture of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar.

Right of reply in the Sixth Committee

Exercising India's Right of Reply on Wednesday in the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly, which was discussing measures to eliminate international terrorism, First Secretary Raghoo Puri of India's Permanent Mission to the UN said Pakistan was trying to obscure the central question: what happens when terrorists are financed, facilitated, trained, sheltered or supported from the territory of a state.

"Terrorism cannot be defeated by declarations," Puri said, insisting it required action against perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors.

The Azhar reward question

Pakistan recently announced a reward of 7 million Pakistani rupees for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Azhar, the UN-listed head of Jaish-e-Mohammed and mastermind of several attacks against India. India has dismissed the move as a "gimmick" aimed at covering up state support for terrorism.

Puri questioned Pakistan's claim that it did not know Azhar's whereabouts, noting that media reports had contacted Azhar and obtained his comments on India's Operation Sindoor. "If the media can reach him, surely the Pakistani state knows his whereabouts," he said. Pakistan has claimed Azhar is hiding in Afghanistan, a claim Afghanistan's Taliban government has rejected.

9/11, 26/11 and Pahalgam

India underlined that the world had not forgotten the 9/11, 26/11 and Pahalgam attacks. Puri also noted that Pakistan's representatives had, just months ago, used the same forum to call Jaish-e-Mohammed a "defunct organisation" — adding that the world had seen this script before and India was "clear-eyed that this time also it is going to be no different".
