Hindustan Zinc on Monday reported a record second quarter, with consolidated net profit surging 142% year on year to Rs 6,412 crore for the July-September quarter of FY27, powered by higher metal prices, stronger production and a sharp fall in costs.
The Vedanta group company posted its highest-ever quarterly revenue from operations at Rs 15,093 crore, up 76.5% from Rs 8,549 crore in the year-ago period. Higher metal prices, increased metal production, stronger by-product realisation and a firmer dollar drove the top line, while total expenses grew a more modest 31.5% to Rs 6,895 crore.
Margins at their best
Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation more than doubled, rising around 108% to a record Rs 9,285 crore, as the EBITDA margin expanded to 62% from 52% a year earlier. Revenue from zinc sales climbed 54% to Rs 8,224 crore, while net silver sales surged 141% to Rs 4,111 crore. Lead and other metal sales rose 35% and 151% respectively.
The cost of producing zinc, excluding royalty, fell 29% year on year to $703 per tonne — the company credited better mined grades, higher output, greater renewable-power consumption and stronger by-product realisations, partly offset by lower domestic coal usage and higher input commodity prices amid the ongoing geopolitical crisis. The company also reported record second-quarter mined metal production of 271,000 tonnes and refined metal production of 264,000 tonnes, while silver output grew 20% to 173 tonnes.
What management said
Chief executive Amarendu Prakash said the record production figures demonstrated the strength of the company's operations and assets, adding that the focus remained on disciplined growth, AI-led innovation and building its critical minerals portfolio to support India's energy transition. Chief financial officer Amit Gupta pointed to the 62% EBITDA margin, strong cash generation and a robust balance sheet, and said the company would keep investing in growth while maintaining financial resilience.
For the first half of FY27, revenue rose 77% to Rs 28,840 crore, EBITDA climbed 108% to Rs 17,359 crore and net profit grew 143% to Rs 11,881 crore. Separately, Hindustan Zinc said it had secured a letter of intent for the Gundlupet rare-earth element and yttrium block in Karnataka, advancing its push into critical minerals.
